The importance of tonight's final game of the regular season for the Stanly County Post 76 American Legion baseball team has become a battle for home-field advantage in the opening round of the playoffs.
Stanly was swept in a day-night doubleheader on Thursday by Rowan County, who has claimed the Southeast Conference title thanks to the wins over Post 76 on Thursday.
In the opening game of the doubleheader, Zac Almond's grand slam lifted Stanly to a 6-0 lead before Rowan County rallied to take a 9-7 lead into the bottom of the ninth. Stanly scored one run in the ninth to make it 9-8 and had the tying run on first base but could not bring him home.
The nightcap of the twinbill at Newman Park in Salisbury saw Rowan jump out to a 2-0 lead on two unearned runs in the bottom of the first enroute to a 9-1 win, clinching the Southeast Conference title in the Southern Division of Area III baseball.
Stanly will play Southern Rowan in the opening round of the Area III playoffs in a best-of-five series starting July 2. Home-field advantage will be determined after the outcome of Southern Rowan's game this afternoon with Concord is known, along with tonight's Stanly County - Southern Rowan game at Don Montgomery Park at 7 p.m.
