Piedmont claims wins at local swim meet

Sunday, January 26, 2014 — In a high school swim meet Jan. 17, Piedmont took first place over squads from Albemarle, South Stanly, North Stanly, Union Academy, East Montgomery and South Davidson.

The Panthers took the boys’ event with a score of 118, followed by Union Academy (108), East Montgomery (16), South Stanly (15), Albemarle (10), South Davidson (10) and North Stanly (8).

Piedmont’s girls’ squad finished with 124 points, with the Cardinals in second with 52 points. North took third with 47, followed by Albemarle (27), South Davidson (23) and South Stanly (19).

Girls’ Results

South’s Skylar Laslowski took third place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:50.19.3. She also placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:35.42.

Whitney Throneburg of North Stanly took first in the 200-yard individual medley (IM) with an automatic state qualifying time of 2:40.61. She also finished third in the 100-yard freestyle with an automatic state time of 1:00.33.

In the long-distance 500-yard freestyle event, Yasmeen Hill of Albemarle took second place in a time of 7:21.59.

North took second in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with freshman Victoria Lambert and Kristin Haley, senior Holly Loflin and sophomore Whitney Throneburg finishing in 2:07.02.

Albemarle’s team of freshman Sam Holshouser and Hill and sophomores Landon-Anne Mullis and Katherine Mansfield took third place in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 5:13.13.

Sam Holshouser of Albemarle finished third in the 50-yard freestyle (30.63).

Boys’ Results

Jack Williams of Albemarle was second in the 200-yard freestyle and third in the 100-yard backstroke.

South Stanly’s Camden Diggs finished in second place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:24.56

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
