Gray Stone stays undefeated with win at South Stanly; Rebel Bulls sweep at home tri-match; Bulldogs earn wins

Thursday, September 19, 2013 — The volleyball teams of Stanly County continued their seasons with matches on Saturday and this week as well.

South and West Stanly had a tri-match with East Montgomery on Saturday, while Gray Stone put its unbeaten mark on the line Tuesday at South Stanly.

Tuesday’s Matches

Gray Stone 3

South Stanly 1

Bearing signs marked with the name of their own Twitter account, the rowdy student section of the Rowdy Rebel Bulls created a raucous atmosphere on Tuesday when the undefeated Gray Stone squad rolled into Norwood to face the Bulls.

Gray Stone kept their perfect start to the season alive with a 3-1 win over the Bulls. Scores of the match were 25-13, 22-25, 25-14 and 25-17.

The Knights (10-0, 5-0 YVC West) were led by Bailey Freeburn, who had 12 kills and six blocks. Maggie Habeeb had 15 assists for Gray Stone and Roni Boss added 10 assists as well.

For South Stanly (9-4, 2-3), Aleena Jordan and Cidney Bowers had six kills each. Jules Cohen had 11 assists.

“Gray Stone is the best team we have played so far; they make it very hard to put the ball on the floor,” South head coach Tom Gray said.

Albemarle 3

North Stanly 0

In YVC-West action on Tuesday night, the Bulldogs improved to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the YVC-West division with a 3-0 win over North Stanly.

Akela Branch led the ‘Dogs with 24 kills and Tiffanie Currie added six kills. Morgan Smet had 30 assists.

Leah Russell led the Comets (6-4, 3-2) with 12 digs and Dana Beadle had three kills.

Monday’s Match

Albemarle 3

East Rowan 1

Albemarle went out of conference play on Monday and earned a 3-1 win over East Rowan. Scores of the match were 27-25, 21-25, 25-16 and 25-20.

Akela Branch had a huge night with 28 kills for the Bulldogs while Tiffanie Currie added six kills.

Saturday’s Matches

South Stanly 3

East Montgomery 0

The Bulls opened play in the tri-match at South Saturday with a 3-0 win over the Eagles. Scores of the match were 25-22, 25-19 and 25-10 in favor of South.

Alenna Jordan led the Bulls with nine kills, while Rachel Almond and Dajé Drake added six kills. Drake also had six aces, and Riley Cohen had 15 assists.

South Stanly 3

West Stanly 1

After the Colts claimed a 3-0 win over East Montgomery in the second match, the two Stanly teams faced off in the final match of the event and the Bulls claimed the 3-1 win with scores of 25-23, 18-25, 25-20 and 25-20.

Freshman Landis Bogel led the Bulls with nine kills, while McKenzie Thompson, Aleena Jordan and Cidney Bowers had eight kills each. Riley Cohen led South with 16 assists.

“These girls play with so much heart and enthusiasm; they are what make coaching rewarding,” South head coach Tom Gray said.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
