North Stanly football improved to 5-1 with win at Chatham Central

Sunday, September 29, 2013 — The North Stanly Comets continued their record-setting season on Friday night with the team’s first road game at Chatham Central as a member of the Yadkin Valley Conference.

Chatham entered the game having been shutout 14 quarters in a row dating back to the third quarter of the Bears’ 42-16 win over Kestrel Heights on Sept. 6.

North had scored 125 points in its previous two games, setting marks for the first and third-most points by the Comets in a game in school history.

Head coach Ralph Jackson and North kept both streaks alive, posting another top mark for points while keeping the Bears’ shutout streak intact with a 59-0 win.

Antonio Williams had another solid performance for the Comets (5-1, 3-0 YVC), with 213 yards on 17 carries and three touchdowns. The sophomore is now over the 1,000-yard mark for the season with 1,047 yards along with 12 rushing touchdowns.

North quarterback Meleek Thomas posted his second-highest passing yardage total of the season, going 7-for-12 for 194 yards and two touchdowns to his brother, Caleb Thomas.

The Comets’ offense put up huge numbers on the Chatham Central defense. North had a combined 574 yards of offense, including 313 rushing yards on 39 carries for an average of 7.8 yards per carry.

North’s 59 points against Chatham Central is the fourth-most points scored by a Comets team in school history. In the past three weeks, North has scored 184 points and has set marks for three of the four top point totals in Comet football history.

North’s “Lumber Yard” defense dominated the Bears, giving up a total net yardage of 36 while forcing six turnovers. The defense also scored a safety when Nick Chandler tackled Lucas Craig in the endzone.

The Bears nearly broke their scoreless streak when Banks Burke stripped the ball out of a Comet running back’s hands and made his way down the field. However, Burke fumbled the ball into the endzone and the ball rolled out of bounds for a touchback to North.

“Our team chemistry has improved tremendously. We have a good group of seniors that want to be on the winning side; the guys are playing harder. I’m pleased with their efforts,” Comets head coach Ralph Jackson said.

North looks to keep its four-game win streak alive this Friday at home against East Montgomery at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles won 22-7 versus South Stanly (see related story, 1B).
