Stanly swimming teams compete at Wingate University

Wednesday, December 5, 2012 — Members of the high school swim teams in Stanly County participated in a swim meet this past Saturday afternoon held at Wingate University, hosted by Piedmont High School. All five Stanly teams were represented, along with Forest Hills, Central Academy and the host Panthers.

Girls’ Results

The meet started off well for Stanly’s swimmers as North Stanly’s team of Sarah Krug, Jenna Huff, Whitney Throneburg and Celeste Parker took fourth in the 200-yard IM relay. The Comet squad later placed third in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Individual results included Albemarle’s Bailey Holshouser winning the 200-yard individual medley race by 13 seconds a time of 2:31.91. Throneburg of North Stanly came in third in the 200-yard IM.

North’s Huff finished atop the swimmers in the 50-yard freestyle sprint while Throneburg won the 100-yard freestyle for the Comets by 10 seconds finishing in a time of 1:04.69.

West Stanly’s Allyn Rowles placed third in the 200-yard freestyle and Albemarle’s Mackenzie Smet was third in the 500-yard freestyle.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, three Stanly swimmers swept the top three finishers, with Holshouser leading the way in a time of 1:16.32. Huff was second in 1:21.98 followed by Smet in third in 1:30.53.

On the boys’ side, the West Stanly team of Collin Hartmann, Igor Bayluk, Jmes Hathcock and Cody Marks took second in the 200-yard IM relay and third in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Hartmann also placed second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:33.08 and second in the 100-yard backstroke. West’s Hathcock won the 200-yard IM by 14 seconds with a time of 2:38.38, and won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:13.00.

Mason Krol earned first in the 100-yard breaststroke for Albemarle, winning by two seconds with a time of 1:25.06. Krol also placed third in the 100-yard freestyle.

Two Stanly swimmers placed 1-2 in the 500-yard freestyle (West’s Bayluk and Albemarle’s William Ivey).
