South Stanly wins at North Stanly; Albemarle pitcher throws no-hitter versus Queen's Grant

Sunday, March 30, 2014 — In baseball games this week, South Stanly went on the road and got a big offensive effort in a Yadkin Valley Conference West road win at North Stanly, while Albemarle got a dominant pitching performance from a NCAA Div. I-bound senior in a YVC West road win.

South Stanly 12, North Stanly 4

Meeting for the first time as conference opponents, South Stanly traveled to North Stanly on Thursday.

The Bulls got a huge effort from a sophomore and posted the team’s highest run total of the season in a 12-4 win.

Easton Horton went the distance on the mound for South (3-7, 2-1 YVC West), allowing two earned runs and striking out eight.

Sophomore catcher Vance Deese hit for the cycle for the Bulls, going 4-for-4 with three runs driven in.

“We played like I had hoped we would earlier in the season,” South head coach Terry Tucker said.

“Easton threw the best game of his high school career. We will continue taking one game at a time to get ready for each opponent.”

South Stanly travels to West Montgomery on Tuesday then hosts Chatham Central on Wednesday and West Montgomery on Thursday.

The home game with the Warriors will include a community service project for the South Stanly baseball team, who will be shaving heads to raise money for kids’ cancer research.

Albemarle 8, Queen’s Grant 0

The Bulldogs got a solid performance from senior Justin Crump in a road win at Queen’s Grant. Crump threw a complete-game no-hitter, striking out 13 for the Bulldogs (4-1, 2-0 YVC West).

Bryan Blanton and Dillon Guenther each delivered RBIs and two hits each, while Zach Brafford and Holden Davis each brought runs in as well.

“(Crump) gave us a solid outing on the mound and (Brafford) had a solid game behind the plate," Albemarle head coach Jamie Kimrey said.

The Bulldogs travel to North Moore Tuesday and host a varsity doubleheader with Union Academy on Thursday.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
