On April 27, the North Carolina Wildlife Hunter Skills state tournament took place in Ellerbe.
The Gray Stone Marksmanship squad took their second straight state team championship at the event.
Gray Stone’s team took first place in three out of the four events held: shotgun, rifle and orienteering.
On the individual side, the Knights had two competitors to finish in the top three in the individual overall state championship contest.
Hunter Efird took first place in the contest for his second straight individual state title, and Lea Efird placed in third. Competitors must compete in all four events (archery, shotgun, rifle and orienterring) in order to qualify for the individual state championship.
Gray Stone has fielded a marksmanship team for four seasons now and the Knights have had the individual state champion in all four years of the team’s existence. Drew Walker was the state champion in 2010 with Lea Efird winning in 2011.
The Knights’ squad had also previously won both the county and district championships prior to their win at the state event.
Gray Stone’s team is also the reigning national champions in the YHEC competition, sponsored by the National Rifle Association. A Gray Stone team will be competing at the 2013 national event at the end of this July in Raton, N.M.
