Falcons swept in twinbill by King Tornado

Wednesday, January 16, 2013 — The Pfeiffer men’s and women’s basketball teams travelled to Bristol, Tenn. for a Conference Carolina doubleheader on Saturday night against the King Tornado.

Both teams host Mount Olive on Wednesday night with the women starting at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:30.

Women’s Basketball

King College cashed in on 16 of their 23 free throw attempts to upset visiting Pfeiffer 70-64 in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action on Saturday night.

The first half saw the lead change on 11 different occasions as King (7-4, 3-4 CC) had to play a majority of the catch up in the first 20 minutes. Carter Williams put the Falcons (9-2, 4-2) up three with 6:32 to play in the half before Brittany Cox did the same at the three minute mark putting the Falcons up 33-30.

Down by 12 with 8:46 to play in the second half, a Bridget Rothert basket would help start the rally. After a Christina Harvey jumper and ensuing turnover by the Tornado, Cox hit the go-ahead three with 3:18 remaining to put the Falcons up 62-61. Harvey then broke a 62-62 tie hitting the back end of two free throws until back-to-back jumpers by Durrett would give King the lead for good.

Cox led the way for Pfeiffer dropping in 25 while Williams finished with 11.

Men’s Basketball

King College, ranked 22nd in the nation, held Pfeiffer to just 12 first half points enroute to claiming a 67-51 win.

Logan Lyle made a pair of early threes before a couple of Tayron Gibson free throws got the Falcons (3-9, 1-5 CC) on the board. From there, King (11-2, 6-1) opened up the contest bolting out on a 21-4 run as a three-point play by Drew Standifer put the hosts up 27-6. Matt Ellwood would connect on Pfeiffer's first made shot from the field hitting a three at the 8:58 mark of the first half. AJ Clark, Kenny Tappin and Josh Humphrey would have the other made baskets in a slow first half for the Falcons. Pfeiffer trailed King 43-12 after the first 20 minutes of play.

Gibson scored six straight points early in the second half trying to rally the Falcons, slicing the King lead down to 59-42 with two more free throws at the 6:56 mark of the second. Pfeiffer ran out of time trying to overcome the first-half deficit, outscoring King 39-24 in the second.

Jason Seymore led the Tornado with 16 points as one of three scorers in double figures while Humphrey and Gibson paced the Falcons with 18 and 15, respectively.
