The North Stanly Comet girls’ basketball squad improved to 13-9 overall and evened their conference mark to 6-6 with a 57-51 road win Friday night at Central Academy.

Gentry Grubb led the Comets with 22 points and Jenni Speight added 14.

The West Stanly girls twice rallied from double-digit deficits to earn a 50-47 home win over Piedmont.

Kayla Chapman and Destiny Wilson each led the Colts (8-13, 3-9) with 13 points off the bench.

Jessica Prince led the Panthers (9-12, 5-7) with 12 points.

West’s bench scored 34 of the team’s points in the game.

The Colts rallied from a 12-point first-quarter deficit to pull within a point 31-30 at halftime.

West Stanly then fell behind by 10 points in the second half and rallied again, taking a lead in the final four minutes and preserving the win.

“I was most pleased with the way we played with composure in the fourth. We got the lead and ran some clock,” West Stanly head coach Wesley Kidd said.

    The Stanly County 15 year-old All-Stars Babe Ruth Baseball team battled its way through the losers’ bracket after suffering a 10-9 loss to the Union County Americans to reach the championship finals.
    Stanly rallied to force a deciding third game but Union County prevailed to earn a trip to the regionals in Varina, Virginia.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
