South Stanly loses in first round at Union Academy

Sunday, November 17, 2013 — The South Stanly Rowdy Rebel Bulls continued their season Friday night as they took on fellow Yadkin Valley Conference opponent, Union Academy. A decent crowd from both schools was exposed to a defensive matchup as the Cardinals scored twice in the second quarter and earned a 12-0 win in the opening round of the 2013 NCHSAA 1A state playoffs.

Both quarterbacks were sacked three times and running backs on both sides were also tackled for losses during the contest. The Cardinals gained only 225 yards from scrimmage while the Rowdy Rebel Bulls accounted for 160 overall.

All of the game's scoring came in the second period when on the very first play, Cardinals tailback Manasseh Missick scored on a 14-yard right sweep for 6-0 lead.

Later in the second, South appeared to be gaining momentum when Montrell Brewer dropped Union Academy's Craig Twele for a 14-yard loss, enabling the Bulls to take possession on downs.

South went three-and-out, and the Cardinals scored their next touchdown when Twele connected with Malik Pando for a 73-yard pass directly down the middle of the field, putting the Cardinals up 12-0.

South junior quarterback Luke Burris completed 10 of 20 passes for 92 yards, with senior Ryan Coley catching three passes for 43 yards.

Defensively, Bernardo Granados, who is the team’s kicker and punter as well as playing both offense and defense, picked off a Twele pass and returned it for 22 yards. Brewer had two quarterback sacks along with a sack from junior defensive lineman David Spivey.

“A tough loss ... but I am proud of our effort. The game came down to one 70-yard big play and us needing to finish on a couple of our scoring opportunities. This group was young but South Stanly High School will be a force with a little time in the offseason,” Rowdy Rebel Bulls head coach Tasker Fleming said.

South Stanly completed its 2013 campaign with a 3-9 record. Union Academy advances to play at Albemarle Bulldogs this Friday.
