Gray Stone tops North Stanly; Albemarle, South Stanly win

Thursday, September 26, 2013 — In volleyball action on Tuesday, Albemarle and Gray Stone maintained their tie for first place in the Yadkin Valley Conference West while South Stanly improved its YVC West record with a win and West Stanly suffered a Rocky River Conference loss to Mount Pleasant.

Tuesday’s Matches

Gray Stone 3

North Stanly 0

With a 3-0 sweep of North Stanly at home, Gray Stone improved to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the YVC West.

Scores of the match were 25-21, 25-16 and 25-14.

Jordan Redman led the Knights with 10 kills, while Sydney Freeman added seven kills. Shannon Efird had five kills and seven blocks, while setters Maggie Habeeb and Roni Boss each added nine assists.

Dana Beadle led North Stanly with three kills while Megan Hart had three blocks. Leah Russell led the Comets with 12 digs.

Gray Stone hosts Queens tonight while North Stanly travels to Union Academy; both games are in the YVC West division.

Albemarle 3

Union Academy 0

The Bulldogs maintained their tie with Gray Stone for the top sport in the YVC West with a 3-0 road win at at Union Academy.

Scores of the match were 25-12, 25-7 and 25-21 in favor of Albemarle (12-2, 6-1 YVC West).

Akela Branch led the Bulldogs with 12 kills and Samantha Blue added seven kills. Tiffanie Currie had six aces and Morgan Smet had 14 assists.

Danielle Eichensehr led Union Academy (2-13, 1-6) with five kills.

Albemarle travels to South Stanly tonight at 6.

South Stanly 3

Queen’s Grant 0

The Bulls improved to 11-4 overall and 4-3 in the YVC West wth a 3-0 win at Queen’s Grant. Scores of the match were 25-22, 27-25 and 25-21.

Dajé Drake led South with nine kills in the first two sets, but suffered an ankle injury in the second set.

Playing in her first varsity match of the season after suffering a back injury, Brandi Nesbitt led South with three service aces. Jules Cohen led the Rebel Bulls with 13 assists as well.

Mount Pleasant 3

West Stanly 1

The West Stanly Colts volleyball squad entered Tuesday’s Rocky River Conference game having won three of their past four matches.

Last week, West Stanly won at Forest Hills 3-0 (25-12, 25-11 and 25-13) and in a home match against Monroe 3-0 as well (25-12, 25-10 and 25-14).

In the matchup with Monroe, Meredith Summers and Courtney Grant led the team with seven kills each, while Shay Lutwiller had seven assists. Cassie Almond had seven service aces and Meg Ball led the Colts with nine digs.

On Tuesday night, West continued RRC play with a 3-1 loss at home to Mount Pleasant. Scores of the match were 25-24, 25-14, 15-25 and 25-12 in favor of the Tigers (6-6, 5-0).

Courtney Grant and Camden Fraley led the Colts (6-6, 3-1) with five kills each, with Meredith Summers adding four kills and 14 digs. Meg Ball had 17 digs to lead West and Grant added six service aces.

The Colts host Parkwood tonight.
