In volleyball matches this week, the teams of Stanly County all earned wins, including Monday’s win for North Stanly over West Montgomery and several wins on Tuesday by a number of the county’s squads.
North Stanly 3
West Montgomery 1
In their first year playing volleyball in the Yadkin Valley Conference, head coach Beth Poolos and the Comets have established a strong presence in the team’s new conference. North Stanly is third in the YVC West Division, and on Monday night, the Comets handed visiting West Montgomery only their fourth loss in 18 matches this season 3-1.
Scores of the match were 19-25, 25-22, 25-15 and 25-21 in favor of the Comets (9-5).
Dana Beadle and Bailey Blankenship led North with seven kills each, while the Comets got from strong serving runs by Megan Hart and Elizabeth Hudson, according to Poolos.
“This was a probably our best game as far as playing as a team,” Poolos said.
The Comets are on the road for the remainder of the regular season but will host the YVC West volleyball tournament Oct. 14-16.
West Stanly 3
Central Academy 0
The Colts improved to 8-7 overall and 5-2 in the Rocky River Conference with a 3-0 road win at Central Academy. Scores of the match were 25-11, 25-12 and 25-11.
West Stanly had 28 kills and 39 digs as a team in the match, with Meredith Summers leading the Colts in both categories with 13 kills and 13 digs.
Shay Lutwiller paced West with 11 assists, and Brooke McIlwaine had four of the team’s 12 aces. Courtney Grant added three aces.
West Stanly hosts Forest Hills tonight in a Rocky River Conference matchup, then plays three matches next week, hosting Albemarle in a non-conference match Monday then two RRC road matches at Monroe and at Mount Pleasant.
The 2013 Rocky River Conference volleyball tournament will start Oct. 14 at Mount Pleasant.
West Montgomery 0
The Bulldogs earned their 13th straight win Tuesday with a 3-0 win over West Montgomery with scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 25-17.
Akela Branch again led the Bulldogs (15-2) with 22 kills, while Ta’leasha Currie added seven kills and three different players, Tiffani Currie, Morgan Smet and Samantha Blue had four kills each.
Albemarle and Gray Stone are tied at 7-1 in the YVC West with the final week of games coming next week.
Gray Stone 3
South Davidson 0
Gray Stone continued their strong season on Tuesday with a 3-0 home win over South Davidson with scores of 25-12, 25-13 and 25-7.
Jordan Redman led the Knights (11-1, 7-1 YVC West) with 14 kills, while Maggie Habeeb had 14 assists and Roni Boss added 12 assists.
The Knights travel to West Montgomery tonight.
South Stanly 3
Chatham Central 0
South improved to 12-5 overall with a 3-0 home win Tuesday over Chatham Central with scores of 25-16, 25-12 and 25-14.
Freshman Cidney Bowers led the Bulls with 10 kills, while McKenzie Thompson added six kills and six digs. Riley Cohen had 12 assists.
The Bulls head to East Montgomery tonight.
