Albemarle Bulldogs win home playoff basketball games

Tuesday, February 26, 2014 — The Albemarle Bulldogs varsity basketball teams each earned the No. 1 seeds in their respective Midwest pods for the state basketball playoffs that kicked off on Monday night.

Head coach Al Andrew and the boys’ squad hosted River Mill Academy while the Bulldogs girls and head coach Eric Davis took on Roxboro Community.


Albemarle 92, River Mill Academy 47

The Bulldogs’ offense produced better in Monday’s first-round matchup then the team had all season long in regards to points scored.

Albemarle shot over 50 percent in the game and scored a season-high 92 points in a home win over the River Mill Academy Jaguars.

Trey Nivens led six in double figures for the Bulldogs (23-2) with 15 points.

Albemarle was 33-of-64 overall in the game (52 percent) and 7-of-22 from the three-point arc. The Bulldogs also took advantage of chances at the free-throw line, knocking down 19-of-24 foul shots.

The Bulldogs will host the Bishop McGuinness Villains on Wednesday night at 7. Bishop (21-6) advanced with a 78-74 win over Roxboro Community.

Albemarle 73, Roxboro Community 39

The Bulldogs jumped out to a fast start and cruised into the second round of the state playoffs with a big win at home over the Roxboro Community Bulldogs.

Akela Branch led the Bulldogs (23-3) with 25 points.

Albemarle jumped out to an 11-4 lead over the first four minutes of the quarter and led by 15 after one.

Leading 27-15 in the second, the Bulldogs put the game out of reach with a 11-0 run.

Albemarle hosts Mount Airy Wednesday night at 7. The Bears (20-5) won 80-49 over Chatham Central.
