Yadkin Valley Diamond Classic

Southlake tops Voyager for title; North Stanly beats Albemarle for third place

Tuesday, April 9, 2013 — In the first-ever Yadkin Valley Diamond Classic, hosted by the Albemarle Parks and Recreation Department, Southlake Christian out of Huntersville took on Durham’s Voyager Academy in the championship finals, while local teams Albemarle and North Stanly faced off in the third-place game.

After winning their two pool games on Wednesday, the Southlake Christian Eagles had not taken the field for two days until Saturday’s championship game against Voyager Academy, who had won early Saturday to advance to the title game.

A huge eight-run effort by the visiting Eagles earned the team the championship of the first-ever Yadkin Valley Diamond Classic 11-3 over the Vikings.

Andrew Napinski earned the win in relief for the Eagles (10-2) of starter Bradley Hallman, who allowed two earned runs in 6.1 innings and had 15 strikeouts.

Loy Stone took the loss for the Vikings (5-4) despite striking out 14 batters in 8.1 innings of work on the mound.

The third-place game at the Classic saw a matchup between two storied rivals on the diamond as home team Albemarle hosted North Stanly.

Jumping out to a fast two-run lead in their opening at-bats, the Comets claimed a 6-0 shutout victory and won third place at the Classic behind solid pitching from Carson Sells.

In the fifth-place game on Saturday afternoon, the Anson County Bearcats broke through for their first win of the season, earning a fifth-place finish at the classic with a 10-4 win over West Columbus (6-10).

The Bulldogs earned their way into the third-place game on Saturday afternoon with an 8-4 win over West Columbus late Friday night.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
