Thursday, May 23, 2013 — The two remaining Stanly County high school sports teams still alive in their respective playoff both have advanced to their respective Western Regional Series with wins on Tuesday and Wednesday.
In the 1A baseball playoffs, South Stanly and East Surry needed extra innings to see which team advanced to face Hendersonville in the state playoffs. The Bulls got a clutch ninth-inning hit from senior Connor Ford and won 2-1 over the Cardinals.
South travels to Hendersonville for a 5 p.m. game today with the Bearcats in the opening game of the best-of-three series. Game Two will be Friday night at 7, with Game Three if necessary at Hendersonville on Saturday.
West Stanly met Rocky River Conference rival Cuthbertson on Wednesday night in the fourth round of the 2A state softball playoffs, the fourth time the two teams have met this season.
The Colts won 3-2 at Cuthbertson and play today at 5 p.m. at home against Pisgah. West Stanly goes on the road to Pisgah Saturday for Game Two and, if necessary, Game Three.
