Stanly County Volleyball Playoff Notebook

Albemarle advances to 1A third-round; West Stanly loses at North Surry

Thursday, October 24, 2013 — In second-round volleyball playoff games on Tuesday night, the Albemarle Bulldogs faced off against the East Wilkes Cardinals, while West Stanly made the trip up to Mount Airy to face the No. 1 seed from the Western Piedmont Athletic Conference, the North Surry Greyhounds.

Albemarle 3

East Wilkes 0

The Bulldogs came charging out of the gate and staged an impressive finish in the final set in earning a 3-0 win over the Cardinals.

Scores of the match were 25-12, 25-21 and 26-24.

Akela Branch led Albemarle (22-2) with 20 kills while Samantha Blue added 13 kills.

Libero Caroline Synder led the Dogs with nine digs and setter Morgan Smet had 34 assists.

The Bulldogs won the first set easily, but the Cardinals (9-11) battled back in the second set, pulling to within a point at 21-20 before Albemarle scored four of the set’s final five points.

In the third set, Albemarle led 6-2 but the Cardinals rallied to take the lead 16-15 and led 24-20 before the Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run to end the match.

Albemarle hosts Starmount (23-6), the No. 1 seed from the Mountain Valley Conference, tonight at 6.

North Surry 3

West Stanly 0

The Colts wrapped up their 2013 season with a 3-0 road loss at North Surry.

Scores of the match were 25-14, 25-15 and 25-12 in favor of the Greyhounds (26-3).

Cat Morgan led the Colts (15-8) with seven kills while Camden Fraley added five kills and had 13 assists.

West Stanly graduates four seniors from this year’s team that won the Rocky River Conference tournament championship: Fraley, Morgan, Courtney Grant and Hailey Ulrick.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
