Stanly runners compete at cross-country regionals

Thursday, October 31, 2013 — A total of 16 runners from Stanly County survived regionals to advance to the NCHSAA cross-country state championship meet on Saturday afternoon.

In the girls 2-A Midwest Regional, West Stanly‘s Leflar McManus established a new school record as the blazed the 3.1-mile course with a 20:30. The freshman runner beat the record, set in 2010 by two-seconds.

At the 2010 Midwest Regional, Lady Colt Kayla Redmon had previously set the record with a 20:32 run.

With Hannah Thomas, the Colts consistent number two runner, out with a stress fracture, the Rocky River Cross Country Champions finished sixth in the meet. McManus, in addition to earning a spot on the All-Midwest Region Team, advanced to the state meet as an individual runner.

In the 1-A Midwest Regional, the Gray Stone girls and boys advanced to the finals with second and third place finishes respectively.

In the girls race, Gray Stone‘s tandem of Annie Habeeb and Caroline McLeod ran their way onto the All-Midwest Region Team with their fifth and sixth place finish. Habeeb ran the course in 20:43 with McLeod finishing twelve seconds later with in 20:55. Bishop McGuinness won the meet with 28 points. Gray Stone was second with 63.

North Stanly‘s Lythi Barnette is also heading to the state finals. Her 22:19 performance and twenty-first place finish allowed her to advance as an individual runner.

In the boys race, Gray Stone‘s Dennis Collins was one spot away from making the All-Region team. The Knight runner finished 11th in 17:26. Teammate David Cowan had his best race of the season to place 18th with a time of 17:55. The Knights finished in third place with 107 points.

Bishop McGuinness swept the meet with the boys taking the title with a score of 46. Yadkin Valley‘s Chatham Central also advanced to the state meet with their fourth place finish with 115 points.

North Stanly placed eighth with a score of 243. South Stanly was sixteenth with 424 points.

The runners return to Beeson Park in Kernersville on Saturday for the State Championship Race. The Gray Stone boys run at 10:30 am with the Gray Stone Girls and Lythi Barnette of North racing at 11:30. McManus will participate in the last race of the day at 4:30 pm.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
