West Stanly football loses to Monroe

Sunday, November 3, 2013 — After three losses of nine points or less in non-conference play, the Rocky River Conference schedule for West has seen the Colts stay in the middle of the pack, with a win over Central Academy and a near-miss to Forest Hills.

With 26 position players and two kickers on the roster Friday night when the Colts hosted Monroe, West head coach James Johnson said he knew his team “was fighting an uphill battle.”

Despite a 48-8 loss to Monroe on Friday, West Stanly still has a chance to finish in third place outright in the six-team RRC.

In the game, B.J. Hill led the way for West Stanly (2-8, 1-3 RRC) with 86 yards on 14 carries, while his backfield teammate, Ryan McCormick, had 72 yards on 15 carries with one rushing touchdown.

Matt Price was 2-for-3 passing with completions to Ethan Burleson and Josh Wilson, but the Colt quarterback was unable to get more passes off due to the furious rushing attack of the Redhawks.

“We competed early on and had a chance to make some plays,” Johnson said, adding that his team had some mistakes in the first three quarters of the game.

Johnson also credited Burleson’s play at tight end in the absence of injured starter Charlie Eudy, as well as the West Stanly receiving corps for their efforts in run blocking this week.

Monroe led 28-0 at halftime and had a 48-0 advantage before West Stanly got points on the scoreboard.

The Colts’ scoring drive came on a six-minute march down the field in the final quarter, with McCormick scoring the touchdown and Blaine Long adding a two-point conversion on a run.

Monroe improved to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in the RRC, with next week’s game against Forest Hills becoming the defacto championship game for the conference crown.

A three-way tie could pop up for third place in the conference next week, with West hosting Mount Pleasant (4-6, 2-2) and Parkwood (5-5, 1-3) hosting Central Academy.

Should the Colts beat the Tigers and the Rebels win over the Cougars, West, Mount Pleasant and Parkwood would finish in a three-way tie, with coin flips needed to decide who is the third-place winner.

If the Cougars beat Parkwood and West beats the Tigers, the Colts would have third place outright in the conference because of their head-to-head matchup.

Mount Pleasant “is very good defensively,” according to Johnson, who added that he felt “there is a good chance, if we execute well, for it to be a defensive game.  It’s a rivalry game and both teams will come out fired up.”
