Five Stanly teams reach the playoffs

Wednesday, October 31, 2012 — The North Carolina High School Athletic Association announced this weekend and on Monday the pairings for both the football and soccer state championships.

Two Stanly County football teams and three soccer squads will open postseason play this week.

1A Football Playoffs

 The Albemarle Bulldogs and South Stanly Rowdy Rebel Bulls have both qualified for the postseason.

Albemarle is the  No. 1 seed in the Midwest and the West Region overall and hosts South Robeson (3-7) the #8 in the Midwest and No. 16 in the West.

South Stanly is in the same Midwest pod as the No. 3 Midwest seed and No. 6 in the West Region and hosts Chatham Central, who is No. 6, overall No. 12 in the West Region.

Should Albemarle and South Stanly win their first two playoff contests, the two teams would play again at Albemarle in the third week of the playoffs.

Both games are at home Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

1A Soccer Playoffs

Albemarle and Gray Stone will both play on Halloween night in the opening round of the 1A state playoffs.

The Bulldogs (8-6) are at home Wednesday night and host the Union Academy Cardinals (10-5) from the Rocky River Conference at 6:30 p.m. Lake Norman Charter (15-3-1    ) awaits the winner of Wednesday’s match.

Gray Stone, with a record of 4-6, earned a wild-card berth into the playoffs and travel to Bishop McGuinness for a 5 p.m. match with the Villains. The winner of the match would face East Montgomery (14-4-3) in the second round.

2A Soccer Playoffs

The West Stanly Colts finished in third place in the 1A/2A Rocky River Conference this season among the 2A schools and will be on the road in the first round.

West travels to Trinity High School to face the 14-4-2 Bulldogs, the No. 1 seed from the Pac-6 Conference.
