Stanly Special Olympians to compete Saturday

Thursday, March 7, 2013 — Special Olympics North Carolina Western Basketball & Cheerleading Tournament will be in Charlotte, Matthews & Indian Trail from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. March 9. More than 800 athletes will compete.

 

Basketball Individual Skills: Crestdale Middle School, 940 Sam Newell Rd., Matthews, 28105

Basketball Team 3-on-3: East Mecklenburg High School, 6800 Monroe Rd. Charlotte, 28212;  Mint Hill Middle School, 11501 Idlewild Rd., Matthews, 28105; The Fletcher School, 8500 Sardis Rd., Charlotte, 28270

Basketball Team 5-on-5: Carolina Courts, 7210 Stinson Hartis Rd. Indian Trail, 28079

Cheerleading: Butler High School, 1810 Matthews Mint-Hill Rd., Matthews 28105

 

The eastern portion of the state will compete in Johnston County on March 16.

A total of nearly 1,500 athletes will compete between the two events. Athletes have trained for a minimum of eight weeks at the local level prior to moving on to this state-level competition.

 

More than 800 athletes will compete in the SONC Western Basketball & Cheerleading Tournament. They will represent the following counties/agencies: Alamance, Alexander, Buncombe, Burke, Cabarrus, Caldwell, Catawba, Clay, Cleveland, Dare, Davidson, Davie, Durham, Forsyth, Gaston, Guilford/Greensboro, Guilford/High Point, Haywood, Henderson, Iredell, Jackson, Lincoln, Madison, Mecklenburg, Mitchell, Moore, New Hanover, Pitt, Qualla Boundary, Randolph, Rockingham, Rowan, Stanly, Surry, Transylvania, Union, Wake, Watauga and Wilkes.

 

Medical volunteers are still needed to ensure this event runs smoothly. Medical volunteers such as doctors, nurses, licensed practitioners, emergency medical technicians and athletic trainers are needed to ensure the safety of all Special Olympics athletes at the various venues.
