This season, the Colts were the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament behind top-seeded South Stanly.
For the second straight season, the two teams met in the conference tournament finals, with the Colts earning their second win in two seasons over the Bulls in the RRMSAC finals on Jan. 17 by the score of 32-28.
Bailey Huneycutt led the Colts (10-2) with 16 points, with Blair Helms adding six points and Karlee Efird scoring five points.
Kimball Midgett scored eight points to lead South Stanly with Jaida Allen scoring seven points and Makayla Dockery adding six points.
South Stanly led by one point after the first quarter, but the Colts rallied to take the lead 18-17 at halftime.
“With only four returning players from the previous year, we knew that this was going to be a rebuilding year,” West head coach Kristen Sides said.
“We needed to establish leaders and put players into positions they may or may not have been accustomed to. The dedication, determination, and effort put into this season by each player, was unbelievable. Leaders emerged, athletes started to show their true talent, and a group of girls came together to make a memorable season. I am blessed to have such a dedicated, hardworking, and talented group of girls. I am extremely proud of their accomplishments as individuals and athletes.”
Regarding the game and his team’s efforts, South Stanly head coach Scott Stevens said, “Congratulations to West on a great championship game. They are an excellent team. We fought hard, but they were a little better this time.”
