Gray Stone soccer stays undefeated; Albemarle loses to East Montgomery

Thursday, September 5, 2013 — The high school soccer season continued this week with Gray Stone, the No. 1-ranked 1A team in the state, taking on the No. 10-ranked Community School of Davidson, while Albemarle hosted No. 2 East Montgomery on Wednesday night.

In a matchup of two teams ranked in the state by the latest coaches poll,  the Knights hosted the Spartans.

Gray Stone entered the matchup 5-0 on the season with wins over East Rowan, Forest Hills, South Davidson, Mount Pleasant and a 1-0 win over West Stanly last week.

The two teams battled to a 2-2 tie, keeping the Knights’ unbeaten streak alive this season.

The Spartans took an early 1-0 lead on a long free kick that was flicked by the Gray Stone keeper at the last second.

CSD then added another goal eight minutes later on a breakaway off a through ball to lead 2-0.

Gray Stone got on the board in the 20th minute when Brandon Fortin scored an unassisted goal off a cross that was knocked down to the turf.

The match stayed 2-1 Spartans into the second half until Sean Lavook hammered a cross home in the 50th minute for a 2-2 tie. Isaiah Wingeier-Rayo assisted on the goal.

“We seemed to have more chances than they did but could not finish,”  Gray Stone head coach Jeff Morris said.

“(The Spartants) put us back on our heels more than anyone else we have played so far. They are fast, skilled and well-coached. They will certainly make an impact in the 1A soccer scene this year.”

The Knights will open Yadkin Valley Conference West play on Monday when Gray Stone hosts Albemarle.

The Bulldogs entered Wednesday’s home match with the eagles with a 1-2 overall record, having lost at West Stanly 3-1 and at Forest Hills 3-2 before winning 1-0 at Chatham Central.

East entered the matchup 6-1 overall, with their only loss coming to Union Pines 2-1.

Albemarle led the match at the halftime break and nearly rallied in the final five minutes to extend the game to overtime, losing 4-3.

Adam Yang put the Bulldogs on the board in the seventh minute, giving the home team a 1-0 early lead, but East Montgomery answered 22 minutes later with a Ricky Sanchez goal.

Six minutes before halftime, Yang scored his second goal of the game on a breakaway down the left side of the field to give Albemarle a 2-1 lead that the ‘Dogs took into halftime.

East Montgomery tied the game 2-2 in the 53rd minute on an unusual play when the ball stopped resting against the flag in the corner to the left of the Bulldog goal. Marco Guerrero-Munoz picked up the ball and scored on the short side of the goal.

Sergio Hernandez put the Eagles up 3-2 with a goal eight minutes before the end of regulation, then Sanchez scored what proved to be an important insurance goal three minutes later.

Trailing 4-2, Ross Plyler headed a ball into the back of the net on a long free kick in the 76th minute to pull back within a goal.

Albemarle had chances in the final four minutes, while keeper Jaylyn Potter made several stops at the end to keep the game close, but the Eagles hung on for the win. Donnie Hall, Plyler and Potter all played in goal for the Bulldogs.
