Stanly County Baseball Playoff Notebook

Albemarle, South Stanly advance in 1A playoffs; West Stanly loses in ninth inning at Randleman

Monday, May 13, 2013 — Three Stanly County baseball teams opened play in the state playoffs on Friday night, two on the road and one at home.

South Stanly hosted a familiar opponent in East Montgomery, while Albemarle traveled to Central Academy in Monroe and West Stanly travelled to Randleman.

1A State Playoffs

South Stanly 4

East Montgomery 2

South Stanly opened their 2013 playoffs on Friday after earning a 6-4 non-conference win over West Stanly on Tuesday.

The Bulls’ first-round opponent, East Montgomery, had played South tough in two previous games, with the Bulls winning with margins of 1-0 at home and 5-4 on the road.

The third matchup on Friday night saw the Bulls jump out to an early lead and hold on for the 4-2 victory.

Albemarle 18

Central Academy 2

The Bulldogs opened the playoffs on Friday with a road win at Walter Bickett Stadium over Central Academy Cougars (2-12) 18-2.

Albemarle travels to Mount Airy (14-10) on Tuesday.

2A State Playoffs

Randleman 6

West Stanly 5

The West Stanly Colts suffered a loss in the opening round of the state 2A playoffs that was described by head coach David Lee as “heartbreaking.”
