In the opening round of the state playoffs, the softball teams of West Stanly and Gray Stone advanced to the second round of the playoffs, while South Stanly was upset at home by Lake Norman Charter.
2A State Playoffs
West Stanly 16
East Montgomery 2
The West Stanly offense had put some big numbers up this season, including 15 out of 20 wins where the Colts scored 10 runs or more going into Friday’s playoff.
After a slower start offensively, the Colts exploded for 10 runs over a two-inning span and advanced to the second round with a 16-6 win over Surry Central (12-13).
Gray Stone 8
Union Academy 0
Gray Stone received a wild card berth into the state 1A playoffs and went on the road to face a Union Academy squad that had only four wins this season.
The Knights started slow offensively, but picked up the pace quickly after a turn through the lineup and went on to the 8-0 win over the Cardinals (4-14).
Lake Norman Charter 2
South Stanly 1
The defending 1A state softball champions, South Stanly, finished tied for second in the YVC this season despite averaging slightly fewer runs than last year’s title team.
In 2012, the Bulls averaged 6.6 runs per game over 34 games, while this year’s team averaged six runs per game through 23 contests.
In Tuesday’s first-round playoff game against Lake Norman Charter, South managed six hits but struggled to push runs across the plate as the Bulls were upset by the Knights 2-1.
