Post 76 ends losing slide, builds three-game win streak

Tuesday, June 18, 2013 — The Stanly County senior baseball squad ended a brief three-game losing slide by winning three in a row, starting with a doubleheader in Mocksville on Saturday and continuing with a Southeast Conference home win Sunday versus Kannapolis.

Justin Crump threw six innings of two-hit shutout baseball for Post 76 while Rusty Brown had three RBIs and two extra-base hits in a six-inning win over Mocksville.

On the same day that Carlos Rodon threw a complete game victory for N.C. State in the 2013 NCAA College World Series, Stanly County Post 76 fans were treated to a similar performance by Cody McKenzie in a 4-2 win over Kannapolis to open conference play this season.

McKenzie was perfect through 6.1 innings, retiring the first 19 batters in a row before a hard line drive hit off of him and his throw to first was not in time.

Stanly’s starting pitcher also helped his own cause out with a two-RBI single in a four-run third inning.

Clay Fesperman was 3-for-4 for Stanly with a double and a run score, as well as picking up the save.

    The Stanly County 15 year-old All-Stars Babe Ruth Baseball team battled its way through the losers’ bracket after suffering a 10-9 loss to the Union County Americans to reach the championship finals.
    Stanly rallied to force a deciding third game but Union County prevailed to earn a trip to the regionals in Varina, Virginia.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
