FLW series returns to Badin Lake

Tournament benefits economy in many ways, officials say

Thursday, March 20, 2014 — The fishing was so good on Badin Lake last year that the Walmart FLW Bass Fishing League decided to come back for more this weekend.

The Walmart Bass Fishing League Piedmont division will hold a tournament on Badin Lake that will run from 7:15 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday.

The event is sponsored by the Stanly County Convention & Visitors Bureau, with registration taking place from 4-6 p.m. Friday at Walmart, 781 Leonard Ave., Albemarle.

“There are always benefits from tournaments such as these,” Chris Lambert, director of the CVB, said.

“Economically, Stanly County stands to gain from gas sales, bait sales, overnight stays, food sales etc.

“There is another aspect that tournaments like this offer us and that is exposure. You can tell people how pretty a place is day-in and day-out, but until they experience it and see it for themselves, they really have noidea. I think the latter is the reason this tournament keeps coming back.”

The tournament allows anglers to keep five bass that are weighed at the completion of the tournament. The size limit is 14 inches, and all fish will be weighed at the Alcoa Landing station in Badin beginning at 3:30 p.m.

The angler with the heaviest haul wins up to $6,000.

Chad Poteat of Mount Airy won the boater competition during last year’s tournament, which was June 8. He caught five fish weighing 17 pounds, 11 ounces and picked up $5,794 in winnings. Jeremy Talbert of Albemarle was the highest local finisher, with five fish caught weighing 14 pounds, 7 ounces. He won $402 for his finish and placed 10th overall.

In the co-angler division, Hubert Roman of Lexington won with five fish caught, weighing 21 pounds, 2 ounces. He took home $1,897 for the haul. Keith Phillips of Albemarle was second with five fish, weighing 16 pounds, 14 ounces. He won $949.

“The depth of Badin Lake and the natural shorelines make it an ideal location for fishing tournaments,” Lambert said.

“All of the competitors continue to compliment the lake and the area.”

Badin Town Manager Jay Almond said having the tournament on the lake and in the town is just part of an active season in the area.

“Badin is home to multiple fishing tournaments per week during the peak season and the Walmart FLW Tournament hosted by the Stanly County Convention and Visitors Bureau is a huge one,” Almond said.

“Tournament participants are a focused bunch and we’re happy they enjoy fishing Badin.”

Stanly County Chamber of Commerce President Kathy Almond agrees that this weekend will be a big one with the FLW Tournament part of it.

“(The fishing tournaments) bring business into our county where people spend the night, they buy gasoline, they eat,” Almond said.

“Not only do they come to the lake to fish, but they support other businesses as well. I think because our lakes are easily accessible, that’s one reason they are very popular with people.”
