Gray Stone golf wins YVC tournament

Thursday, May 1, 2014 — Piney Point Golf Club in Norwood played host on Monday to the 2014 Yadkin Valley Conference West tournament match, an 18-hole event that determined which teams and individuals would move on to the 1A Regionals, as well as the top 11 golfers that would earn All-YVC West standing.

Gray Stone entered Monday’s match having claimed the regular-season title, and the Knights made it a clean sweep by taking the tournament crowns as well, besting second-place Union Academy by 18 strokes.

The Knights finished with an overall team total of 319 for Monday’s tournament, with the Cardinals taking second with a 338. Albemarle finished third with a 355, followed by South Stanly (405) and North Stanly (421).

Both Gray Stone and Union Academy will play as a team in the 1A Midwest Regional scheduled for May 5-6 at Cedarbrook Country Club in Elkin.

Individual medalist honors at the YVC West tournament went to Albemarle’s Jay Andrew, whose 39 on the front nine and 35 on the back nine gave him a +2 round of 74 for the day, one stroke ahead of Gray Stone’s Chase Davis and Dray Smith, who both shot rounds of 75.

Adam Habeeb finished third of the Knights’ golfers with an 84, followed by Josh Burris (85), Will Casmus (90) and Ryan Eudy (95).

Albemarle’s Andrew and his teammate, William Ivey, will play as individuals at the 1A regionals. Ivey shot a 78 to place him second on the Bulldogs. Peyton Howell shot 92 for the ‘Dogs, followed by Samantha Holshouser (111).

South Stanly’s Donald Poole will compete as an individual at the 1A regionals next week. Poole finished with an 83 at the YVC match, followed on his team by Camden Diggs (108), Alex Gresham (108), Tanner Franklin (108), Sam Carpenter (110) and Noah Honeycutt (115)

North Stanly’s Brock Faulkner will represent the Comets next week as an individual at the 1A regionals. Faulkner finished the YVC event with an 18-hole score of 89, Conner Blalock finished second with a 103, followed by Jack Smith (112), Andrew Morgan (117), Charleton Edwards (124) and Harrison Kruis (124).

The All-YVC West Conference team, made up of the top 11 golfers for the entire season with one high round dropped, was also announced at the conference meet. Gray Stone led the way with five selections: Davis (ranked 1st), Smith (3rd), Casmus (8th), Habeeb (9th) and Burris (10th). Albemarle’s Andrew (2nd) and Ivey (5th) were named All-YVC West, along with South’s Poole (6th) and North’s Faulkner (11th). Union Academy’s Matthew Schneider (4th) and Jared Allen (7th) rounded out the All-Conference team.

    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
