West Stanly softball claims RRC regular season title

Sunday, May 4, 2014 — The West Stanly Colts had two softball games remaining this week, including a game Thursday that with a win would give the Colts the Rocky River Conference regular-season title outright along with a non-conference county rival game on Wednesday.

Thursday’s Game

West Stanly 13, Central Acad. 0

The Colts’ run to last season’s 2A state championship did not include winning the RRC regular-season title as West finished third in 2013.

This season, the Colts suffered just one conference loss in 10 games, including a 13-0 win over Central Academy Thursday, enroute to winning the team’s third regular-season title in four years.

Brennan Broadaway pitched a five-inning two-hit shutout for the Colts (17-5, 9-1 RRC) while West racked up 15 hits on offense.

Sam Lowder and McKenzie Barbee led the way with three hits each for West Stanly, while Broadaway and Reagan Thomas both added two hits.

Thursday’s total of 13 runs was also the fourth game in a row that West Stanly has reached double digits in runs.

“Hopefully, we are starting to come into our own,” West head coach Wesley Kidd said.

“If you want to advance (in the playoffs), you have to play your best.”

Kidd also talked about the play of some of the younger players.

“The last two years, we have had freshman step up,” Kidd said.

“Our players got a taste of (success) from last year and they are excited about going back and competing again.”

West Stanly will have a bye in the first round of the Rocky River Conference tournament on Monday. The Colts will play the winner of the Central Academy / Forest Hills matchup on Tuesday at Forest Hills.

The championship finals of the RRC tournament are slated for Thursday at Forest Hills.
