Sunday, October 7, 2012 — The last time that the Gray Stone girls’ tennis team had won the Yadkin Valley Conference title was back in the 2006 season.

Six years later, the Knights stand atop the YVC once again and are ranked second in the state in the 1A classification.

Gray Stone claimed the YVC regular-season championship last Wednesday with a 9-0 win over North Rowan.

Included in that win was a big rally in the No. 3 doubles match by Sarah Lanning and Ilya Wang, who trailed 5-0 in their match but came back to win nine of the next 11 games for a 9-7 win to seal the sweep of North Rowan.

“We are very happy to have won the conference this year, and we are looking forward to the post season,” Gray Stone Head Coach Jeff Walter said.

The Knights are the number-two ranked team in the state in the 1A classification according to the latest poll from the North Carolina High School Tennis Coaches Association, just four points behind Mount Airy for the top spot. Both Gray Stone and the Granite Bears have been one and two in the polls for three solid weeks.

Gray Stone (17-0, 13-0 YVC) had their match Monday against North Rowan rained out.
