Colts maintain lead in RRC; Knights, Bulls claim wins

Wednesday, October 3, 2012 — The volleyball teams of Stanly County are in the process of wrapping up their regular-season schedules with the last of their conference matchups, with one team continuing to build their lead in the conference.

Last Monday’s Match

West Stanly 3

Monroe 0

The Colts continued their perfect streak through play in the Rocky River Conference with a 3-0 win over Monroe. Scores of the match were 25-17, 25-13 and 25-17.

Courtney Grant had 10 kills in 17 attempts with one block for West, while junior Camden Fraley had four kills in eight attempts and eight aces. Junior Samantha Lowder added four kills and six aces, and Autumn LeBroad had 10 aces and three kills.

Setters Catherine Morgan and Hailey Ulrick each had nine assists.

Thursday’s Matches

West Stanly 3

Central Academy 0

West Stanly continued their dominance in conference play with a 3-0 RRC road win at Central Academy. Scores of the match were 18-25, 25-18, 25-18 and 25-15 in favor of the Colts (14-1, 9-0 RRC).

Emily Morgan and Courtney Grant had 20 kills each to lead West. Morgan added six blocks while Grant had three blocks.

Itccel Jaramillo led the Colts with 15 digs, adding five kills, while Catherine Morgan had a team-high 18 assists and Alex Poplin added 15 assists.

The Colts host Forest Hills at 6 p.m. tonight in the team’s only scheduled match of the week.

On the JV side, West continued their 26-set winning streak with a 2-0 sweep of the Cougars to go 13-0 overall and 7-0 in RRC play.

Gray Stone 3

North Rowan 0

Gray Stone entered last Thursday’s home match with North Rowan needing a win to take a half-game lead over Albemarle for second place in the Yadkin Valley Conference.

The Knights got that needed win over the Cavaliers in straight sets with scores of 25-17, 25-7 and 25-10.

Darcie Herron led Gray Stone (10-3, 10-3 YVC) with seven kills and three blocks, while setter Catherine Har-ward had nine assists.

Gray Stone travels to South Davidson at 6 p.m tonight, then goes to Albemarle for a showdown with the Bulldogs for the No. 2 seed from the YVC for the conference tournament and the 1A state playoffs.

South Stanly 3

Chatham Central 2

The Rebel Bulls hosted Chatham Central on Thursday night, where the two teams battled into five sets and the Bulls pulled away for the 3-2 Yadkin Valley Conference win.

Scores of the match were 25-16, 25-8, 21-25, 19-25 and 15-10.

Daje Drake had a huge night for South Stanly (8-10, 6-6 YVC), delivering 20 kills, three blocks and four aces.

Taylor Gray was also outstanding in the match for South with 24 assists, 21 digs and eight kills, while Madison Hicks had a strong serving night with eight aces.

The Bulls host West Montgomery at 6 p.m. tonight.
