Annual Watermelon Run moves to Stanly Co. YMCA

Wednesday, July 3, 2013 — The 10th Annual Vac & Dash Watermelon Run scheduled for the Fourth of July will have a new venue this year.

Originally scheduled for Morrow Mountain State Park, due to the damage from the storm of 2013, the run will now be at the Stanly County Family YMCA.

There is no charge for the run, but those that would like a Watermelon Run T-shirt, will be able to purchase them for $5.

The four-mile run will start at 7 a.m. on Thursday at the YMCA.  T-shirt pick-up and sign-in will begin at 6:15 a.m. The race is not timed. It is a fun, pressure-free event.

The course starts at the traffic light on Franklin Street in front of the Y.  Runners will run to First Street and turn right on Main Street.

When they cross the bridge, runners will take a right on the Roger Snyder Greenway until they get to Salisbury Avenue. They will turn right on Salisbury, then take a right on the Carolina Thread Greenway. When they get to the end of the pavement, they will reverse the course back to the Y.

Runners that show up wearing red, white and blue will get a Watermelon Run koozie or towel.

Watermelon and freezie pops will be at the finish line to cool the runners down.

The run began in 2004 when Jane Snyder, Adam Storms, Derek Blalock, Craig Ramsey and Peter Asciutto decided to wear red, white and blue for an Independence Day run.

The following year a dozen runners participated with a watermelon awaiting them at the finish.

Last year the run exceeded the 100 participant level for the first time.

For more information, contact Vac & Dash at (704) 983-3274.

T-shirt and packet pick-up is currently under way at Vac & Dash.

Cracking the motor, hearing the roar, tearing down the front stretch at 200 mph with numerous other cars doing the same. The rush, excitement and adrenaline pumping all while maintaining focus and poise as you power the aggressive vehicle around the track.
