Six Stanly County Wrestlers set to wrestle in state tournament at Greensboro

Thursday, February 20, 2014 — The matchups for the six Stanly County wrestlers competing at the NCHSAA state wrestling finals in Greensboro have been set.

1A Wrestling

South Stanly’s Cody Shields (44-7) takes on Starmount sophomore Jack McCormick (35-13) in the opening round of the 106-pound bracket.

Also at 106, Albemarle freshman Tate Plyler (27-8) faces Mount Airy freshman Jacob Hogue (42-4).

Albemarle senior Grant Plyler (29-6) will take on Cherokee’s Levi Swearengin (19-6) in the first round of the 126-pound bracket.

At 160 pounds, South’s Josh Lewellen (26-16) takes on  Bishop McGuinness’ Frank LaDew (28-5).

In the 182-pound bracket, South Stanly’s Sawyer Bartlett (37-10) is the top seed from the East and faces Hayesville sophomore Jacob Matheson (26-7).

2A Wrestling

West Stanly junior Pavin Chunn (43-9) will open in the first round of the 2A’s 113-pound division with a matchup versus Carrboro freshman Hserti Ya (29-17).
