West Stanly girls place third at RRC track meet

Tuesday, April 15, 2014 — The Rocky River Conference championship track meet was held this past Wednesday at Monroe High School.

West Stanly’s girls took third place in the meet with an overall team score of 64 behind second-place Mount Pleasant (159) and Monroe (225). Parkwood finished in fourth place with 38, followed by Forest Hills (36) and Central Academy (23).

On the boys’ side, Mount Pleasant won the conference meet with a score of 180, followed by Forest Hills (126.5), Monroe (118.5), Central Academy (82), Parkwood (20) and West Stanly (16).

Girls’ Results

The West Stanly girls’ track squad had several top four results in claiming third place in the conference meet.

In the 4x800 meter relay, West Stanly took first place as the team of Morgan Tucker, Lefler McManus, Maegan Tucker and Hanna Turner finished in 11:17.41, six seconds better than Mount Pleasant.

West also had top-four finishes in the three relays. Turner, Ashley Burleson, Tucker and McManus took third in the 4x400, while Kiley Harless, Kirstie Huneycutt, Burleson and Whitney McCormick took third in the 4x200 relay. Harless, Huneycutt, Burleson and McCormick took fourth in the 4x100 relay.

In the 400 meter race, Burleson came in fourth place with a time of 1:07.86, while in the 800-meter race, Andrea Montes took third place in 2:42.97.

Colt freshman McManus picked up the third of her three medals on the day in the 1,600-meter race, finishing second with a time of 5:55.16.

In the 3,200-meter race, West’s K.G. Shields finished fourth with a time of 14:46.39.

Boys’ Results

The Colts boys’ track team placed several athletes in the top five of events at the conference meet.

In the 1,600-meter race, sophomore Seth Harper took fifth place with a time of 5:06.06. Harper also placed fourth in the 3,200-meter run, posting a time of 11:28.56.

Junior Josh Wilson posted a time of 44.51 for West Stanly in the 300-meter hurdles, earning a fourth-place finish for the Colts.

The team of Wilson, Matt Price, Logan Greene and Brady Ennis finished in 1:37.30 in the 4x200 relay in fourth place.

West Stanly and the other track teams of Stanly County will be competing in the county track meet on Wednesday at Albemarle.

    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
