Sunday, April 20, 2014 — In high school softball games this week, the YVC West’s first-place squad, the North Stanly Comets, took on Gray Stone after the Knights had played a doubleheader on Wednesday versus Queen’s Grant, while West Stanly traveled to Mount Pleasant.

Thursday’s Games

North Stanly 7, Gray Stone 1


The Comets used two big innings to build on the team’s lead in the Yadkin Valley Conference West standings with a 7-1 win over Gray Stone.

Freshman Samantha Hogan earned the win for the Comets (10-3, 7-0 YVC West), allowing just one earned run on four hits with seven strikeouts.

Sydney Freeman took the loss for Gray Stone (8-7, 5-3) allowing five earned runs on 10 hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

North jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Weslyn Almond reached on an error and Keri Faulkner got a bunt single to first base. Both then scored with no outs on a two-RBI double to left field from Heidi Smith. Smith’s courtesy runner later scored on a Leah Russell RBI double.

Faulkner added an RBI double scoring Almond in the second inning to put the Comets up by four runs.

Smith added an RBI double and Russell brought two more runs home on a dboule in the bottom of the fifth, putting North up 7-0.

Gray Stone’s run came in the top of the sixth inning when Mica Furr singled and later scored on a wild pitch.

North Stanly now leads South Stanly by two full games and Gray Stone by 2.5 games in the standings. The Comets and Bulls play at South Stanly after the Easter break.

In a home non-conference matchup, the Colts bounced back from a loss on Wednesday to Mount Pleasant with a dominating six-inning win over the 3A East Rowan Mustangs (8-8).

Freshman Peyton Hallman got the win on the mound for the Colts (14-5).

The West starter got plenty of offensive support as the Colts belted out 14 hits in the win. Walker Barbee led the way with three hits and an RBI, while Abby Pate, Maddie Brown, Brennan Broadaway, Sam Lowder and Shelby Green each added two hits.

The Colts entered Wednesday’s road game at Mount Pleasant with a 2.5 game lead over Central Academy and a 3.5 game lead over the Tigers and the Parkwood Rebels.

Leading 5-0 at Mount, the Tigers rallied for seven runs in the final four innings and handed West the team’s first loss in the conference this season 7-6.
