Gray Stone wins final regular-season golf match

Thursday, February 24, 2014 — The five golf teams of Yadkin Valley Conference West took to the links at Badin Inn Golf Club on Thursday in the final regular-season matchup.

Gray Stone won the team competition with a score of 155, besting Union Academy by 11 strokes. Albemarle took third place with a score of 188, followed by South Stanly (194) and North Stanly (214).

The Knights finish the regular season in first place overall with a score of 807, 43 strokes better than the Cardinals for second place. The Bulldogs finished in third place with a score of 945, followed by South Stanly (984) and North Stanly (1,073).

Two players tied for individual honors in the regular-season finale. Union Academy’s Matthew Schneider and Gray Stone’s Chase Davis tied for first with rounds of 35. Albemarle’s Jay Andrew finished in third place with a 37 and Gray Stone’s Josh Burris took fourth with a round of 38.

Dray Smith finished in third place on the Knights’ scorecard with a 40, followed by Will Casmus (42), Ryan Eudy (46) and Adam Habeeb (48).

William Ivey was the second-lowest golfer for the Bulldogs in the Badin Inn match with a 40, followed by Peyton Howell (54) and Samantha Holshouser (57).

Donald Poole had the lowest round of the day for the Rebel Bulls with a 44, followed by Tanner Franklin (46), Nick Page (50), Sam Carpenter (54), Camden Diggs (56) and Noah Honeycutt (59).

For the Comets, Brock Faulkner had the low round of the day with a 48, followed by Connor Blalock (53), Harrison Kruis (56), Andrew Morgan (57), Jack Smith (58) and Charleton Edwards (61).

The Yadkin Valley Conference 18-hole golf tournament will be April 28 at Piney Point Golf Club in Norwood.

    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
