The boys’ tennis season for the Gray Stone Knights continued this week as the Knights advanced to the 1A quarterfinals for the first time in school history.
After receiving a bye in the first round of the playoffs, Gray Stone hosted fellow YVC opponent East Montgomery in the second round. The Knights earned a 5-0 victory after winning in all five singles matching and leading the No. 6 match which was stopped when the team won their fifth singles’ matchup and claimed the overall team win.
On the individual side of the 1A boys’ tennis, the same local trio of Gray Stone’s Latimer and the Albemarle doubles’ pairing of Joel Morton and Bradley Batten will both play in the state finals tournament this weekend at the Cary Tennis Center.
Latimer finished in second place at the 1A West Regionals and will face Franklin Academy’s Harrison Tucker in the state tournament.
Morton and Batten finished in third place at the 1A West regional tournament at Wake Forest, winning over Union Academy (6-0, 6-1), Bishop McGuinness (3-6, 6-4, 6-1) and one of the teams from Elkin (6-2, 6-1).
The Bulldog pair lost to the No. 2 seed, another Elkin squad, their first loss in 24 matches this season. In the state tournament, Morton and Batten will open on Friday against the North Carolina School of Science and Match pairing of Mu/Qureshi.
