Stanly County splits day-night doubleheader with Kannapolis

Thursday, June 26, 2014 — The Stanly County American Legion senior baseball team entered a rare day-night doubleheader Tuesday with Southeastern Conference opponent Kannapolis with an opportunity to pull ahead in the race for home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Post 76 claimed the opening game of the doubleheader at Northwest Cabarrus High School with a 4-3 win, but fell in the nightcap at Don Montgomery Park, 8-4.

Through Wednesday’s games, Southern Rowan leads Stanly Count by a half-game in the standings. The two teams have a home-at-home series to end the regular season with Stanly hosting Southern Rowan tonight at 7.

Game One

Stanly Co. 4, Kannapolis 3

Stanly County jumped out to a fast four-run lead and held off Post 115 to win the first game of the doubleheader by one run.

David Singletary struck out three batters and allowed three runs over six innings to earn the win for Stanly. Bryan Blanton earned the save.

Zac Almond drove in the first of his two RBIs in the top of the first after Trevor Wilson led off with a walk and Noah Crisco singled. Almond later scored on a Russ Weiker RBI groundout for a 2-0 Post 76 lead.

Crisco delivered an RBI single in the third and later scored on an Almond RBI double to put Stanly up 4-0.

Kam Sherrill got Kannapolis on the board in the third on two wild pitches, then Grayson Miller and Ryan Austin both had RBI singles to pull Post 115 within a run in the fifth.

Singletary pitched out of trouble in the sixth and Blanton came on in the seventh and struck out the side to give the visitors a one-run win.
