Pitchers’ duel goes to visitors, Stanly County eliminated from Area III playoffs

Sunday, July 6, 2014 — Wednesday’s third game of the best-of-five first-round American Legion baseball playoff series between Stanly County and visiting Southern Rowan was the fifth straight contest between the two squads.

The first game, played last Thursday, was a battle of solid pitching where runs came at a premium, but the three games since, including a 13-12 game on Tuesday, were anything but low scoring.

Wednesday’s night’s starting pitching matchup pit Stanly’s Russ Weiker, who pitches next season for Catawba College, versus Dylan Atwell, who recently signed to play at Catawba Valley Community College.

The two hurlers battled deep into the game, but Atwell got enough run support and kept Stanly off the board until late in a 3-1 win, giving Southern Rowan the series sweep.

Atwell went the distance for Southern Rowan (10-11), allowing no earned runs on four hits.

Weiker struck out eight batters and gave up one earned run in eight innings of work, taking theloss for Stanly (10-16).

Southern Rowan jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Chase Labbe RBI double scoring leadoff hitter Chandler Corriher.

The visitors added an unearned run in the third when Ben Gragg reached on an error and later scored on a sacrifice fly.

Defense ruled through the middle innings, including double plays turned by both teams in the fifth and Stanly foiling a suicide squeeze in the sixth.

With two outs in the ninth off reliever David Singletary, Gragg tripled and scored on a Dylan Carpenter RBI double for a three-run lead for the visitors.

Stanly broke the shutout bid for Atwell in the ninth. Singletary reached on a fielder’s choice and later scored on a Bryan Blanton RBI single. However, the next batter flied out to end the game.

“The effort was there,” Stanly’s acting head coach, Colten Burris, said.

“Russ threw a good game. We were solid defensively, but we came up just a little short in the end.

Coach Derek Barringer, who was suspended for Game Three after being ejected Tuesday, talked about the 2014 season overall.

“We finished second in the conference, but the playoffs did not turn out how we wanted,” Barringer said.

“The boys played hard and never seemed to quit.”

Pulling into Charlotte Motor Speedway, the first thing one may think about is getting in one of those really fast cars and taking a spin around the track.
Cracking the motor, hearing the roar, tearing down the front stretch at 200 mph with numerous other cars doing the same. The rush, excitement and adrenaline pumping all while maintaining focus and poise as you power the aggressive vehicle around the track.
