North Stanly baseball: Comets lose in opening round of Easter tournament

Tuesday, April 10, 2012 — The North Stanly Comets varsity baseball team was greeted in the opening round of the Toxey-Griffin Classic tournament on Monday with gusting winds and a 3A Marvin Ridge Mavericks team that had won nine out of their last 10 games.

Matt Huneycutt used that wind to his advantage to give North an early lead, but the Mavericks took advantage of Comet errors to win 9-2 in the third game of the opening day of competition.

Hunter Lunsford took the loss for North (6-8), allowing four earned runs on seven hits in his four innings of work. Carson Sells pitched the final two innings and allowed no earned runs on two hits with one strikeout.

Tyler Chadwick allowed one earned run on four hits in six innings of work for Marvin Ridge (12-4).

With two outs in the top of the first inning, Huneycutt hit a fly ball high into the air in left field, where the strong winds helped carry the ball over the left field fence for a home run.

Marvin Ridge countered in the bottom of the frame when shortstop Derek Smith hit a fly ball in the same direction Huneycutt had for a two-run homer, scoring Chadwick.

A throwing error and a sacrifice fly from Jacob Henderson in the second inning built the Mavericks lead up to 4-1.

Marvin Ridge added three runs in the fourth, including RBIs for Henderson and catcher Kyle Corgan.

Henderson drove in his third RBI of the game in the fifth inning as the Mavericks scored two unearned runs.

North countered in the top of the sixth inning for a run. Huneycutt reached on a fielding error and scored on a Seth Kimrey RBI double down the left-field line.

The Comets continue play in the tournament today against Sun Valley and on Wednesday against Porter Ridge.

Cracking the motor, hearing the roar, tearing down the front stretch at 200 mph with numerous other cars doing the same. The rush, excitement and adrenaline pumping all while maintaining focus and poise as you power the aggressive vehicle around the track.
