The North Carolina High School Athletic Association cross-country playoffs continued this past weekend with the regional competitions.
A number of Stanly County teams and individual runners participated in the races held in Kernersville, with both of the Gray Stone teams finishing high enough to qualify as a team for the state finals this weekend, also in Kernersville.
The top four teams from each regional automatically qualify for the state finals.
1A Girls’ Regionals
Gray Stone junior Caroline McLeod qualified for the 1A Midwest All-Region with her strong finish that helped the Knights finish second as team, qualifying for the state finals.
McLeod came across the line in 20:34, good enough for eighth place overall. She was followed by Sarah Goodnight (17th, 21:20), Rebecca Brickner (18th, 21:22), Kelsey Kiser (25th, 21:57) and Madison Hale (29th, 22:39).
The Knights finished second in the team scoring with 82 points behind Bishop McGuinness. The Villains had four runners in the top 10 and finished with a score of 37.
Also qualifying for the state finals as a team was the Community School of Davidson (94) and East Wilkes (162).
South Stanly placed sixth overall as a team at the 1A girls’ meet, with freshman Ashelyn Murphy the top finisher for the Rebel Bulls (20th, 21:26). Tori Thompson finished second for South (40th, 23:25), followed by Mackenzie Lee (48th, 23:54), Taylor Hunter (54th, 24:16) and Chelsey Culp (66th, 25:18).
Bailey Houlshouser represented Albemarle running as an individual and place 36th overall, finishing with a time of 23:12.
1A Boys’ Regionals
The Gray Stone boys came in fourth place in the 1A Midwest Regional, qualifying for the state meet by being eight points better than Central Academy with scores of 144 to 152, respectively. Bishop McGuinness won the regional over East Wilkes.
Quinton Parsons was the top finisher for Gray Stone as the senior crossed the line in 17:55, good for 19th place. Josh Rolan was next for the Knights (29th place, 18:31) followed by Jake Long (31st, 18:35), Reid Huckabee (32nd, 18:39) and Patrick Parsons (41st, 18:58).
South Stanly finished 14th as a team, with junior Josh Lewellen the top finisher for the Rebel Bulls (49th, 19:27). Dallas Starnes was second for South (82nd, 20:38), followed by Jeff Helms (96th, 21:13), Alec Furr (84th, 20:43), Wesley Smith (97th, 21:20) and Patrick Cruz (99th, 21:37).
Albemarle finished 20th overall as a team, with freshman Jack Williams leading the Bulldogs (105th, 21:58). He was followed on his team by Tyler Moose (124th, 23:28), William Ivey (127th, 23:45), Joey Williams (130th, 24:22) and Hunter Broadway (131st, 24:31).
2A Girls’ Regionals
West Stanly as a team finished in 10th place in the girls’ meet and North Stanly placed 13th.
Senior Jenna Huff was the top girls’ finisher from a Stanly team, taking 28th place for the Comets in a time of 22:31. Also placing for North was Lythi Barnette (41st, 23:44), Sarah Krug (78th, 26:29), Sarah Siebert (80th, 26:38) and Jessi Parker (86th, 30:51).
West Stanly freshman Andrea Montes finished first among the Colts in 24:12, good for 48th place. The Colts’ top five finishers included Courtney Mitchell (49th, 20:18), Kaley Carpenter (53rd, 24:38), Morgan Tucker (59th, 24:59) and Alyssa Robinson (63rd, 25:37).
Cuthbertson won the 2A Midwest Regional girls’ meet with a score of 46, followed by Central Davidson (92), West Davidson (98) and Piedmont (105). West Stokes took fifth place (149), followed by Wilkes Central (152), Ashe County (172), Forbush (173) and East Davidson (190).
2A Boys’ Regionals
Mirroring the results in the boys’ race, West came in 10th place and North in 13th.
West Stanly sophomore Igor Bayluk will represent Stanly County in the boys’ 2A Midwest Regional this weekend in Kernersville as an individual after finishing in fifth place in the top individual qualifiers. Bayluk overall placed 24th in a time of 18:41.
The Colts placed 10th at the meet, including finishes from Logan Hucks (52nd, 19:47), Jonathan Russell (59th, 20:23), Chris Snopkowski (60th, 20:24) and Dillon Streuber (85th, 22:55) to round out West’s top five.
North Stanly placed 13th in the meet, with freshman Noah Lancaster finishing first for the Comets in 19:50, good for 53rd place.
The top five for North included Josh Selke (54th, 19:52), Justin Allman (67th, 20:41), Zack Medlin (78th, 21:30) and Brandon Ragsdale (82nd, 21:57).
Cuthbertson completed the sweep at the regionals in the team event and won the 2A Midwest Regional with a score of 39, qualifying for the state meet as a team along with Central Davidson (51), West Stokes (88) and Piedmont (115). Wilkes Central was fifth (164), followed by Forbush (204), Ashe County (217), West Davidson (240) and Salisbury (241).
