By Charles Curcio, Sports Editor

Thursday, March 14, 2013 — The West Stanly football program has a new coach at the helm.

James Johnson, a long-time assistant coach at Richmond Senior High School, joined the staff of West Stanly High School this week.

Johnson played for and graduated from Richmond Senior, then returned to coach the Raiders after spending his college years getting an engineering degree from N.C. State University. Johnson started by coaching the JV linebackers and was the JV defensive coordinator for two years.

The new West coach then was the varsity defensive line coach for three years before spending the past five seasons as the Raiders’ defensive coordinator. In his first season as the defensive coordinator, the Raiders won the 4AA state title in 2008.
