West Stanly's football season ends with loss to Mount Pleasant

Sunday, November 10, 2013 — The West Stanly Colts football squad entered Friday’s final regular-season contest needing a win at home over the Mount Pleasant Tigers to have a shot at third place in the Rocky River Conference and a berth into the state playoffs.

Turnovers by the Colts led to points for the Tigers as West Stanly’s season ended with a 23-7 home loss to Mount Pleasant.

Five fumbles in the game all led to points for Mount Pleasant (5-6, 3-2), which gained just 89 total yards of offense in the game against the Colts’ defense, but the visitors worked with a short field for most of the game.

R.J. Haywood scooped up a West fumble  and returned it 17 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter to put the Tigers up 7-0, then added 10 points in the second quarter, including a Michael Bingham rushing touchdown and a 29-yard field goal from Junior Austin Parker to lead 17-0 at halftime.

In the third quarter, senior Stephan Mitchell recovered a fumble in the West endzone for a touchdown to go up 23-0.

West Stanly (2-9, 1-4) scored its touchdown in the third quarter when quarterback Matt Price found Ethan Morgan on a fade pattern in the endzone for a five-yard touchdown pass.

The Colts wrap up the season having scored 203 points in 11 games, the most a West team has scored since the 2009 season, when the Colts were 5-7 and scored     267 points in 12 games.

West also held the opposition to 307 points scored, the lowest since 2010.

“A lot of the kids see that we are in a good place, but we were tired with so many kids playing both ways,” West Stanly head coach James Johnson said.
