The Gray Stone girls’ soccer team faced a tough opponent Wednesday in the first round of the NCHSAA state 1A playoffs in a Central Academy team that played in a tough 1A/2A Rocky River Conference that includes two teams ranked in the top 15 in the 2A in the latest poll.
Ranked No. 15 in the state, the visiting Cougars started strong against the host Knights with some early offensive possession, but Gray Stone got a huge lift from an early save and a well-placed free kick to move on to the second round with a 3-0 win over Central Academy.
Gray Stone will travel to Union Academy (13-4-1) on Friday at 6 p.m. for a second-round matchup with the Cardinals, the No. 1 1A seed from the RRC. The Cards finished third overall behind 2A teams Cuthbertson (16-2-4) and Piedmont (12-4-1).
Union lost to Cuthbertson twice, Piedmont once and suffered a non-conference loss to Porter Ridge in the regular season, while the Cards tied Central Academy 1-1 and beat CATA 3-0 as well.
