Stanly County Baseball / Softball Playoff Update

Four remaining Stanly teams advance to third round

Wednesday, May 15, 2013 — The four Stanly County high school varsity baseball and softball teams still remaining in their respective high school state playoffs all earned victories last night and advanced to the third round of the playoffs.

In 1A baseball, Albemarle (13-15) won at Mount Airy (14-11) 4-2 and South Stanly (23-4) won at home over North Moore (12-12) 10-3. The Bulldogs and Rowdy Rebel Bulls will face off against each other Friday night at 7 p.m. at South Stanly; it will be the fourth game between the local rivals this season.

Gray Stone's softball team went on the road Tuesday and earned a 7-1 win at East Montgomery in the 1A playoffs. The Knights will travel to Chatham Central (24-0) on Friday afte the Bears advanced with a 5-0 win over East Surry.

On the western side of the 2A softball playoffs, the West Stanly Colts (22-4) pounded out 20 hits enroute to a 12-6 win over East Davidson (17-8). The Colts host fellow Rocky River Conference opponent Piedmont (20-6) at 7 p.m. on Friday night; the Panthers reached Friday's game after a 5-2 win over Forbush (17-6) Tuesday night 5-2.

    Stanly rallied to force a deciding third game but Union County prevailed to earn a trip to the regionals in Varina, Virginia.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.

    In the final two games of the Central Carolina Scholastic Summer League for the West Stanly squad, the Colts traveled to Scotland County for a doubleheader, making up for Tuesday’s rainout.
