Park Ridge Christian sharpshooters claim third national championship

Thursday, August 8, 2013 — The sharpshooting team representing Park Ridge Christian School in Albemarle continued its dominance in the outdoor sports recently by claiming the 2013 National Rifle Association Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) junior division national championship.

With the win, Park Ridge claimed back-to-back national championships and its third national title in four seasons.

As a team, Park Ridge finished first overall in shotgun, rifle and wildlife identification and second in muzzleloading. The team’s overall point total of 8,157 topped the Arkansas Junior Mossy Oak squad (8,006) for second place and the Oregon junior team for third .

Skyler Efird was top finisher for the Park Ridge squad and placed second overall in the individual junior standings to Arkansas’ Zachery Meyer. Efird took first place in muzzleloading and wildlife identification while finishing second in rifle and archery.

Megan Frick, another member of the Park Ridge team, finished  in first place in both the hunter safety trail and the hunter responsibility exam, while placing third in wildlife identification.

The team members included Casey Cleghorn, Efird, Summer Efird, Frick and Zack Norman, and the team was coached by Heath Efird.

According to the NRA’s website, the YHEC is a “graduate studies” program in outdoor skills and safety training for young hunters.

The program is open to youth that have completed hunter-safety training at the state or provincial level.

The YHEC simulates hunting conditions and is designed to provide a practical environment for youth to prove their skills.
