Stanly County Softball Notebook

West Stanly tops Parkwood; North Stanly sweeps Queen's Grant; Gray Stone downs Albemarle in twinbill

Sunday, April 13, 2014 — In high school softball games this week, West Stanly moved one game closer to clinching the regular-season conference title, while North Stanly faced Queen’s Grant in a doubleheader.

Thursday’s Game

West Stanly 3, Parkwood 2 (8)

The defending 2A state champion Colts continued the team’s recent winning ways on Thursday with another dramatic walkoff win.

Brennan Broadaway provided the walkoff hit for the second straight night as the Colts increased the team’s current win streak to 10 with a 3-2 extra-inning victory.

Broadaway also earned the win on the mound for West Stanly (13-4, 7-0 RRC).

Abby Pate and Broadaway each had two hits for the Colts, while Maddie Brown added a hit and Shelby Green contributed a solo home run.

The win gives West Stanly a two-and-a-half game lead in the standings over Central Academy and a three-game lead over Mount Pleasant.

West Stanly travels to Mount Pleasant on Tuesday, then returns home for non-conference games on Wednesday and Thursday against East Rowan and North Stanly, respectively.

Queen’s Grant 0-0


The Comets entered Friday’s doubleheader with the Queen’s Grant Stallions leading South Stanly in the Yadkin Valley Conference West standings.

North built on that lead and dominated the last-place Stallions in two 15-0 three-innings victories.

Whitney Griffin and Samantha Pugh combined to strike out 17 of the Stallions’ 18 batters in both games, each throwing three perfect innings.

Heidi Smith had four hits in both games for the Comets (9-3, 6-0 YVC West).

North hosts Gray Stone on Tuesday and travels to West Stanly for a non-conference matchup on Thursday.

    The Stanly County 15 year-old All-Stars Babe Ruth Baseball team battled its way through the losers’ bracket after suffering a 10-9 loss to the Union County Americans to reach the championship finals.
    Stanly rallied to force a deciding third game but Union County prevailed to earn a trip to the regionals in Varina, Virginia.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
