Albemarle baseball reaches YVC West tourney finals

Thursday, May 8, 2014 — The 2014 regular season for the Albemarle baseball program saw the Bulldogs win the first regular-season title for the newly aligned Yadkin Valley Conference West and posting 17 regular-season wins.

That win total was the second-most wins in a season for Albemarle in five years, with the four losses as the fewest in that five-year span.

Entering the postseason conference tournament as the number-one seed, Albemarle had a bye in the first round and took on a Queen’s Grant team that earned a 13-1 win over Union Academy in the first round on Monday.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a big early lead and held off the Stallions late in the game for a 7-5 win.

Zac Brafford pitched six innings and earned the win for Albemarle (18-4) and Bryan Blanton came on in the seventh inning getting a strikeout and earning the save.

Anthony Campolo went the distance on the mound and took the loss for Queen’s Grant (9-13).

Albemarle jumped out quickly to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. K.J. McKinney singled to left field, was sacrificed over to second by Dillon Guenther and scored on Zac Brafford’s RBI double to right.

Justin Crump then brought two runs in later in the first with a double to left and Hunter Davis delivered an RBI single. Crump then scored on a throwing error to put the ‘Dogs up by five runs.

Jake Barker got the Stallions on the board in the top of the second with an RBI sacrifice fly, then Queen’s Grant scored again in the third with a sacrifice fly from Christian Austin.

Blanton then showed his baseball savvy in the bottom of the third after reaching base with an RBI double scoring Hunter Davis. Blanton reached third on a single from Mikey Polk, then took off for home when Campolo did not get the ball right away from his teammates after Polk’s hit. The Bulldog senior scored without a throw to make it 7-2 Albemarle.

The Stallions rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth  inning when Conner Day delivered an RBI single and Dan Johnson scored on an error to pull Queen’s Grant within three of Albemarle.

Queen’s Grant threatened in the seventh with two hits to open the inning but Blanton came in and got a strikeout and two groundouts to end the game.

Pulling into Charlotte Motor Speedway, the first thing one may think about is getting in one of those really fast cars and taking a spin around the track.
Cracking the motor, hearing the roar, tearing down the front stretch at 200 mph with numerous other cars doing the same. The rush, excitement and adrenaline pumping all while maintaining focus and poise as you power the aggressive vehicle around the track.
