North Stanly, South Stanly baseball earn wins over Queen's Grant

Sunday, March 23, 2014 — In baseball games this past week, South Stanly and North Stanly both earned YVC West wins over Queen’s Grant.

North Stanly 16, Queen’s Grant 1

The Comets improved to 5-1 on the season and earned the team’s first win in the new Yadkin Valley Conference West on the road Tuesday.

Noah Crisco allowed no earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts in the complete-game victory.

At the plate, Crisco helped his own cause going 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Landon Mullis had two hits and five RBIs for North, while Matt Lambert drove in three runs and Zac Almond and Tyler Burris had two RBIs each.

North led 4-0 after two innings then scored five runs in the fourth and seven runs in the top of the seventh.

North Stanly (5-1) is scheduled to host Union Academy on Tuesday night.

South Stanly 11, Queen’s Grant 1

The Bulls hosted the Stallions on Friday night and needed just five innings to earn an 11-1 win, improving South Stanly’s record to 2-6 overall and giving the Rebel Bulls the team’s first win in the new Yadkin Valley Conference West.

Alex Poplin allowed no earned runs on five hits in earning his first victory on the mound for South this season.

Vance Deese led the Bulls’ offense going 3-for-4 with three RBIs while Ryan Coley and Maxton Horton each added two RBIs.

South Stanly travels to Albemarle on Tuesday.

    Stanly rallied to force a deciding third game but Union County prevailed to earn a trip to the regionals in Varina, Virginia.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
