West Stanly tops Bulldogs; Albemarle shuts out South Stanly

Tuesday, March 25, 2014 — In baseball games this week, West Stanly traveled to Albemarle for a rare Saturday afternoon game, making up a previous rainout, while South Stanly played at Albemarle on Monday in order to avoid expected rainfall forecast for today.

West Stanly 6, Albemarle 1

The Colts improved to 5-1 overall and scored four runs in the team’s final two innings at the plate to earn a five-run win over the Bulldogs.

Hunter Martin pitched six innings and earned the win for the Colts (4-1), allowing one earned run.

At the plate, Tyler Huneycutt led the way for West with three hits including a home run and two RBIs. Cody Cline and Carson Davis each added RBIs as well.

Bryan Blanton led the offense for Albemarle with an RBI while Dillon Guenther added two hits.

West Stanly is scheduled to play at Parkwood tonight, weather permitting, in what would be the Colts’ first conference game of the season.

Albemarle 6, South Stanly 0

The Bulldogs got a solid pitching performance from senior Bryan Blanton  to earn Albemarle’s first win in the YVC West this season 6-0 over the Rebel Bulls.

Blanton threw just under 100 pitches in the complete-game shutout for Albemarle (4-1, 1-0 YVC-West), striking out 12 batters to three walks and allowing two hits.

Dylan Starnes took the loss for South Stanly (2-7, 0-2) pitching four innings and allowing two earned runs on four hits. Easton Horton pitched the final two innings for the Bulls allowing an earned run on one hit with three strikeouts.

Zach Brafford drove in one of his two RBIs in the game in the bottom of the first after Blanton singled and scored on Brafford’s RBI groundout.

Justin Crump led off the second with a double for the Bulldogs and scored on a double play in the bottom of the second for a 2-0 lead.

Ross Plyler scored on a double steal in the third inning, and Crump scored in the fourth inning on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Mikey Polk.

Brafford added an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth and Andrew Oke scored on a throwing error for the game’s final runs.

“I thought he looked stronger as the game went on,” Albemarle head coach Jamie Kimrey said regarding Blanton’s efforts on the mound.

“He is one of the pieces that we are looking for to make us successful this year.”

“I have not pitched much this year,” Blanton said.

“I am getting used to pitching. Innings four through seven, I settled in and found my release point.”

Blanton also praised the defense of the Bulldogs in the game.

“Defense had no errors and Zach had a good performance and no passed balls,” Blanton said.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
