West Stanly earns wins over Central Cabarrus, Parkwood; South Stanly tops Albemarle, Chatham Central

Thursday, March 27, 2014 — In softball games this week, West Stanly earned victories over Central Cabarrus and Parkwood, while South Stanly improved to a game over the .500 mark with a YVC West win over Albemarle and a road win at Chatham Central on Wednesday.

West Stanly tops Vikings, Rebels

In a non-conference road matchup on Monday, West Stanly rallied from a late deficit to send the game to extra innings and then earn a 4-2 win in eight innings.

Brennan Broadaway earned the win for West striking out six batters to just one walk. Brittany Guidera took the loss for the Vikings (6-3).

Walker Barbee led the Colts’ offense going 2-for-3 including a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning that sent the game to extra innings.

Heidi Foreman was 2-for-4 with an RBI while Callie Cline added an RBI double. Both RBIs came in the top of the eighth inning and put the Colts up for good.

Then on Tuesday, West Stanly earned the team’s first Rocky River Conference win of the season 9-5 at Parkwood.

Brennan Broadaway earned the win for West Stanly (5-4, 1-0 RRC) on the mound while Baylee Morton took the loss.

At the plate, Broadaway was 3-for-4 with an RBI while Walker Barbee and Abby Pate each added two RBIs.

South Stanly 15, Albemarle 0

The Rebel Bulls improved to 4-3 on the season and 2-1 in YVC West play with a 15-0 win over Albemarle Tuesday.

Sara Bennett and Sara Beth Thomas combined for the four inning shutout on the mound for South, each pitching two innings. Bennett started and struck out three while Thomas struck out four in relief.

At the plate, Haley Carpenter had a big night, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Junior Rachel Nance was 2-2 with three RBIs and senior Kayla Smith was 2-3 with two RBIs. Sarah Bennett added two RBIs and MacKenzie Lee had an RBI triple for the Bulls as well.

South Stanly 4, Chatham Central 3

The Rebel Bulls went on the road Wednesday night and earned a 4-3 win over the Bears.

Courtney Smith pitched three innings of relief and earned the win for South Stanly (5-3). Sarah Bennett started for South, allowing two earned runs on five hits in four innings of work.

Chelsey Culp drove in all four of South’s runs in the game.

The Rebel Bulls host North Stanly tonight.

    Don Montgomery Park in Albemarle played host this weekend to the state championship tournament for the Western Divsion of Babe Ruth Baseball for 13 year olds.
    After having started with a win Friday night over Union County American, the Stanly County All-Stars posted three more victories en route to the tournament title and a berth into the regionals starting July 29 in Sarasota, Florida.
